The ENVIROLAND team shows its respect and appreciation for Prof. Dr. Eng. Cristian Marunteanu, emeritus professor in the Department of Geological Engineering, Faculty of Geology and Geophysics, within the University of Bucharest, who was awarded the Honorary Membership by the International Association for Engineering Geology and the Environment (IAEG).
Prof. Dr. Eng. Cristian Marunteanu graduated the Faculty of Technical Geology in 1970, he obtained the PhD in Geology in 1987 and due to his proven educational and research abilities, he obtained the title of PhD Supervisor in 1999.
He started his career in Engineering Geology in 1970 and was employed at the University of Bucharest, Faculty of Geology and Geophysics in 1977. He became a professor in 1998 and was a member in the Professorial Council of the Faculty of Geology and Geophysics 1990-1996 and 2004-2011, Dean of the Faculty of Geology and Geophysics 2006-2008, member of the Senate of the University of Bucharest 2006-2011 and Director of the Doctoral School of Geology 2008-2011.
During his career, Prof. Dr. Eng. Cristian Marunteanu has created, introduced and taught new courses in the University curricula such as Engineering Geology, Urbanism and Geoenvironmental Protection, Engineering Geology for Waste Disposal, Landslide Hazard and Risk, Engineering Geology – Fractured Rocks and Toxic and Nuclear Waste Disposal. He published 5 books and manuals as author and coauthor, over 80 scientific papers in national and international prestigious journals and he was manager or member in over 130 research contracts. He is also a member of various prestigious national and international professional associations and he was a member in various technical committees within specialized Ministries of Romania.
The International Association for Engineering Geology and the Environment (IAEG) has recognized the professional abilities of Prof. Dr. Eng. Cristian Marunteanu who was involved in the activities conducted by the Association by organizing various symposiums and welcoming working visits from IAEG representatives. Additionally, he was the President of the Romanian Association for Engineering Geology (ARGI) 1992-2015, Secretary of the Commission 14 “Waste Disposal” of IAEG 2004-2012 and he is a member in Commission 37 “Landslide Nomenclature” of IAEG since 2016.
The short presentation included in the current article shows only a small part of his contribution to the field of Engineering Geology in Romania and at an international level. Thus, on May 18, 2018, the Executive Committee of the International Association for Engineering Geology and the Environment (IAEG) has decided to award the Honorary Membership to Professor Marunteanu as a sign of recognition and appreciation for his exceptional services for the Association.
The Management of ENVIROLAND had the honour to meet and work under the supervision of the Professor, who proved that he is an outstanding professional and a real example for the students of the Faculty of Geology and Geophysics through intelligence, honesty, dignity and dedication.
